Local Elections

    • Greek prefectural and municipal elections usually take place every four years. EU nationals residing in Greece, that are, at least, 17 years of age are entitled to vote and stand as a candidate.
    • EU nationals who have been disqualified from voting in their member state of origin are not allowed to vote or stand for election.
MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS (Who is eligible to vote?)

EU citizens of other Member States are entitled to vote provided:

  • They reside in Greece and will reach the age of 17 years in the election year (until December 31 of that year). 
  • They have not been deprived of the right to vote.
  • They have been registered on the special electoral rolls of their municipality.

To register on special electoral rolls, EU citizens must present themselves to the municipal authority of their place of residence, have a valid identity document (passport or ID card) and fill out a relevant formal declaration form. No additional documents are required.

Municipal Elections (Stand as a candidate)

Citizens of other EU Member States may stand as candidates for the offices of municipal councilor, municipal community councilor and the local community, provided:

  • They have not been deprived of the right to vote in Greece and of the right to stand as a candidate in their home Member State.
  • They have passed the age of 17 years in the election day.
  • They reside within the municipal or local community (referring to candidates for the offices of the municipal community councilor or local community councilor).
